For the next 3 weeks western attire will be the norm in Houston as it’s rodeo time. I have to confess that I don’t own a single piece of western style clothing so I don’t quite fit the look.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a really big deal featuring big name entertainers and raising lots of money for scholarships awarded to young people.
I don’t know how many people go to the rodeo, but when I tell you it’s mass humanity both on the grounds and in the stadium, believe it. This is not a great thing for one who does not like crowds!
As much as the entertainment, I totally enjoy the events. Bronco and bull riding take a lot more courage than I could muster up.
Not being a gal who has ever enjoyed horseback riding, I have great admiration for these gals who showcase their skills in the barrel race.
Chuck wagon races are just plain fun and get the crowd cheering .
The calf scramble is madness with kids doing everything they can to get a calf tied down. The calves are not always real cooperative.
With the rodeo events over for the night, the lights go down and quick as a wink the stadium is transformed into an entertainment venue, this night featuring Garth Brooks, a real favorite among country and western music fans. I have to say he is quite the entertainer feeding off the crowd energy and giving it his all.
I don’t know how late into the night things go, but as we left there was a little two steppin’ going on
and the amusement park was still in full swing.
You know, this is Texas. It’s just kinda surprising that it happens in Houston!
i so appreciate your visit and the comments you leave behind
Now you may not think about Houston being a big time rodeo town but for the next three weeks it’s just that.
There’ll be bronc busting,
barrel races for the gals
chuck wagon races and so much more with nice payback to the winners in every event. The real winners though are the young people who year after year receive generous scholarships which help them continue their education.
This time of year means cowboy hats and denim,
maybe even a prize winning steer showing up for a spell.
Hungry cowboys and cowgirls will gather round to tell tall tales
as they enjoy a cold Lone Star, the national beer of Texas.
Tables don’t have to be too fancy,
but whatever fills the bowl better be hearty and good.
I’m thinking a good bowl of chicken/white bean chili and jalapeño cornbread will be just right.
It’s a fun time of year all right and when you are driving the streets of Houston you better be prepared for whatever is in front of you as you head to the rodeo and a concert by your favorite country/western singer!
i so appreciate your visit and especially the comments you leave behind
Full Plate Thursday
When trailriders converge on Houston, that signals the start of rodeo which goes on for some 3 weeks and is a series of special events in this big city. During this time, Houston converts to its Old West self with cowboy boots and hats and denim being the normal attire, and unexpected sights dot the landscape as, for example, just happened.
As I was following my usual route home, I came across this group of trailriders taking time out in a utility easement not a mile from my house. I couldn’t resist stopping and walking among the wagons, chatting with the riders, male and female, all decked out in their western wear.
Horse smells and bar-b-q aroma filled the air, and good time sounds were everywhere. Some cowboys were taking time out for a siesta, others were caring for animals which included pigs, goats and horses.
Everyone seemed excited to have finished the ride, and all were looking forward to being in the big rodeo parade the following day. They were especially pleased to have good weather as the trailrides more often than not arrive in Houston on a cold, rainy day. This day had a bit of chill in the air, but the sky was blue and the sun was bright.
I can’t imagine what is fun about riding a horse for miles, camping out, eating off the back of a chuck wagon, having no place to shower, but if the spirit of the folks is any indication, it might be worth finding out. This couple says they’ve been trail riding for years and barely finish on before thinking about the next one. That’s Texas for you!
