Chili and Beer

During the three weeks of rodeo in Houston tastes turn to cowboy food like Bar-B-Q, smoked meats and chili.

When any of those are prepared at home, the table has to have some kind of western theme meaning it’s time to pull those straw hats off the shelf.

Mixed with a few farm animals, they make a simple centerpiece.  Livestock of all kinds is shown and sold during rodeo time and generates much of the money awarded to young FFAers who’ve worked so hard raising show quality animals.

Now I don’t have much in the way of tableware that would be used around a chuck wagon, so some creative thinking is required.  Denim chargers get the place settings started.

Polish pottery isn’t very western, but I picked the pieces most solidly blue thinking they would blend into the chargers.

I know I have some bandanas somewhere that I’d like to have used as napkins, but darned if I could find them.  Cowboys do wear some striped shirts which was reason enough to choose these.  And what better time to use the cow napkin rings?  They are one of those things I have no idea where they came from but am glad to have this day.

chicken chiliYou know, cowboys like to keep things simple and this table is just that and perfect for the chili that is cooking away in the kitchen.  It is my favorite white bean/chicken chili that would be tasty around anybody’s campfire especially with an ice cold Lone Star beer!

This Is Houston

For the next 3 weeks western attire will be the norm in Houston as it’s rodeo time.  I have to confess that I don’t own a single piece of western style clothing so I don’t quite fit the look.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a really big deal featuring big name entertainers and raising lots of money for scholarships awarded to young people.

I don’t know how many people go to the rodeo, but when I tell you it’s mass humanity both on the grounds and in the stadium, believe it.  This is not a great thing for one who does not like crowds!

As much as the entertainment, I totally enjoy the events.  Bronco and bull riding take a lot more courage than I could muster up.

barrelracing  Not being a gal who has ever enjoyed horseback riding, I have great admiration for these gals who showcase their skills in the barrel race.

Chuck wagon races are just plain fun and get the crowd cheering .

The calf scramble is madness with kids doing everything they can to get a calf tied down. The calves are not always real cooperative.

With the rodeo events over for the night, the lights go down and quick as a wink the stadium is transformed into an entertainment venue, this night featuring Garth Brooks, a real favorite among country and western music fans.  I have to say he is quite the entertainer feeding off the crowd energy and giving it his all.

I don’t know how late into the night things go, but as we left there was a little two steppin’ going on

and the amusement park was still in full swing.

You know, this is Texas.  It’s just kinda surprising that it happens in Houston!

Now you may not think about Houston being a big time rodeo town but for the next three weeks it’s just that.

BarebackRidingThere’ll be bronc busting,

BarrelRacing barrel races for the gals

ChuckWagons

chuck wagon races and so much more with nice payback to the winners in every event.  The real winners though are the  young people who year after year receive generous scholarships which help them continue their education.

IMG_5968This time of year means cowboy hats and denim,

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHungry cowboys and cowgirls will gather round to tell tall tales

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAas they enjoy a cold Lone Star, the national beer of Texas.

IMG_5970Tables don’t have to be too fancy,

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAbut whatever fills the bowl better be hearty and good.

chicken chiliI’m thinking a good bowl of chicken/white bean chili and jalapeño cornbread will be just right.

It’s a fun time of year all right and when you are driving the streets of Houston you better be prepared for whatever is in front of you as you head to the rodeo and a concert by your favorite country/western singer!
