The Low Country Way

Whether a fund raiser or a just for fun gathering, folks on Dataw Island know how to have a good time and keep events simple.

At a recent fund raiser, one of the chairs asked a few friends, to help set up. I was tickled to be involved, especially when it came to knowing that included table decor. What I didn’t know was how little we had with which to work, but that didn’t stop our creative juices from flowing.

Yards of burlap adorned with pumpkins, pine cones and greenery trimmed from nearby growth added a little zip to blue and white checked cloths.

As it turned out, the look was just right for the delicious southern style barbecue that was on the menu.

I can’t tell you that South Carolina barbecue is better than what I love in Texas, but it’s a close second!

At Pirates on the Pier, an annual event, food was provided by attendees and what a feast it was.

I swooned when I saw this pineapple upside down cake which is one of my all time favorite comfort food desserts. It must have shown because I was given a healthy portion!

As good as the food was, what made this gathering really fun was how into costuming some people were. Already I’m thinking how I can be a pirate’s lassie next year.

Still another fund raiser was Dink for Pink, an evening of play and fun on the pickleball court. Now in its second year, the event raised more than $10,000 to benefit breast cancer without any expense. There’s something to be said for that.

No matter the occasion on Dataw, I am blown away by the enthusiasm and support which builds such a strong sense of community. There will always be need for galas and such, but it’s refreshing to see how much can be achieved without the event being a big production.

  1. I was in Hilton Head Island for 2 weeks in October. My first time, it was lovely. Almost as nice as where I live here in Southampton.😊
Do you still have your place in Maine?

    1. You were so close! How nice it would have been to meet you. We still have our house in Maine which is my favorite place. Dataw came about because a number of our Maine friends are there in the winter. For us it really makes no sense as we still have Houston.

      1. That would have been fun! Might go again next year, friend has a time share there.

  2. What fun! And the food looked sooooo good!
The tables came out great. And congratulations to all for the fabulous funds for breast cancer.
