As summer draws to a close, there’s not much blooming in my garden other than echinacea, hosta and hydrangeas. Happily there’s still enough to cut for a variety of small containers.
Here, the garden’s colors fill small sprinkler cans.
Would you believe the hydrangeas came from the same bush which has blooms ranging from the palest pink to the deepest purple. How does that happen?
Among the sprinkler cans are two little lunch boxes that I got some years ago at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Van Gogh’s flowers mix right in with the ones from the garden!
As so often happens with me, whatever is on the table becomes the centerpiece for a table setting and influences what happens next. Here, the mix of containers and flowers suggested keeping the surrounding pieces simple.
Though simple, there are touches of color and texture. As I looked at the finished table, I had to laugh a little at myself as I realize my choices somewhat reflect transitioning from summer into fall. The flowers allow me to hold onto summer, but what is around them indicates a subtle awareness that it is all but gone.
