Exploring the Kalahari

The Kalahari of Botswana is a hot, desert area where some animals thrive.

One is the zebra, one of my two favorite animals.

Though you may see a zebra or two alone, most travel in groups that are called dazzles .

What is fascinating about them is no two zebras are alike. Each has a unique stripe pattern with some shadowing between each stripe.

Babies are born after an 11 1/2 month gestation, and I was astonished to learn that a female can become pregnant again three days after giving birth. This mama already looks like she may be having another.

A baby can run by the time it is two days old. At about three weeks its legs are as long as an adults which allows the young one to keep up with the herd.

It is not unusual to see zebras and wildebeests together. They appear an odd combination, but the zebra’s sharp eyesight and the wildebeest’s keen hearing allow each extra protection from predators.

My other favorite animal is the giraffe, awkward in a lovely kind of way.

Something about their long eyelashes and soulful eyes touches my heart.

The most adorable animal is the meerkat. We had to get up early be in time to see them come out of their burrows, but it was well worth it.

The entire family greets the day looking all around to see what is going on.

Once satisfied they begin foraging for food going as far as three miles from their home.

Safari days can be quite long and not always rewarded with many animal sightings. No day is a loss, however, as when the sun is dropping it’s time for a sundowner before returning to camp. It is amazing what magic the guide can perform!

Enjoying a refreshing drink and watching the sun do its thing on the desert is a splendid way to call it a day.

i so appreciate your visit and the comments you leave behind
