Many years ago four couples began a holiday tradition of gathering for dinner to celebrate friendship. The tradition continues, but it has changed. One spouse has passed away, another has dementia and his wife finds it sad to come without him. That leaves just five of us who find no reason not to get together.
Since this is likely the last year the hubby and I will be in this house, we are hosting. The Santa gourds on the table will be familiar to all as they have been one place or another in the house for years.
Mixed with them so that everyone has a Santa facing out are these made from cypress knees. I am so appreciative of all things handmade and cherish the pieces that other hands have created.
Since red is dominating so far, I chose to add touches of green. Chargers are used instead of placemats and again the candy striped flatware is on the table. Since this is the only time of year it makes an appearance, it is used every day.
There is no doubt about what dishes to choose! I’m crazy about this collection from Bella Ceramica.
More traditional but perfect complements are the Spode Christmas Tree stems and water glasses.
Playful and fun are napkins in candy cane rings. Though I swore not to buy anything new this year, I couldn’t resist the napkin rings when I went to Pier One for candles! Everyone is entitled to some little something fanciful during the season, don’t you think?
The meal I’m planning will be as simple as the table. What I most look forward to is remembering all that we have shared, and I hope that our holiday tradition continues on for many more years.
