Big Bend is a land of strong beauty, often savage and always imposing.
Lon Garrison
Big Bend is one of the more interesting but least visited national parks in the United States. There’s good reason for that. Big Bend is not an easy place to get to.
It is not right off any super highway which means you better know where to turn to get there. And, it’s a good idea to start with a full tank of gas because there’s no close place to fill up when the gas gauge nears E.
Once there, the solitude and beauty of the place is overwhelming.
It is desert
and mountains.
It is rock formations

and canyons, all formed millions of years ago by volcanic activity.
It is green valleys along the Rio Grande,
the narrow, shallow river that serves as the border between the U.S. and Mexico.

It is native grasses swaying in the wind
and here and there an abandoned ranch or dwelling where a family once lived. It is hard to imagine surviving in such a challenging environment.
Big Bend is sunrise
and sunset and so much more, but that can wait for another day. Do come back to share the grandeur and mystery of this captivating national treasure.
i so appreciate your visit and especially the comments you leave behind

Breathtaking photos – Santa Elena Canyon, for me, is awesome!
For all the years I lived in Texas, I never went to Big Bend. Now my brother on the other hand used to go there every year.
You could go many times and Big Bend would be different every visit.

This national park wasn’t on my radar, but I can see it needs to be! Thanks, Linda!
It is a fascinating place but if you ever go, be sure it’s not in summer!

Ah yes, sunrise….I loved them too!
As a hiker I would LOVE to go to Big Bend someday Lulu. I’ve heard so much about it. Thanks for posting this. Someday I will get there I’m sure! 😊
Yes, you would enjoy hiking there as there is so much to explore. If you ever get there, be sure to go early spring or late fall otherwise it’s very hot in the day.
Our goal is to visit every National Park…I know, huge goal….Love the sunrise and sunset…
Beautiful. I’m telling Scott right now that we need to go there.
