A Gown Day

Rockport HarborBlustery winds, rain, boats rocking in the harbor made it a perfect day to stay inside and have what a friend calls a gown day.  That means you don’t have to get out of pajamas if you don’t want to.

applesDays like this make me want to be in the kitchen and fill the house with sweet smelling aroma.  There are lots of freshly picked apples waiting to be used, so it was to work chopping them for an Apple Dapple Cake.   (Recipe here.)

apple dapple cakeHot out of the oven, a brown sugar/butter topping is poured all over, and the cake is left to cool.

apple dapple cakeTurned out of the pan, my mouth begins to water, but I’ll resist the temptation to have a bite since this will be perfect for the dessert I’m to take to a friend’s house later.

biscoff toffee cookiesNext up are some Biscoff Toffee Cookies, a recipe found here.  In addition to the toffee bits, I added a partially used bag of Ghiardelli semisweet chocolate chips.  Might as well double the pleasure, don’t you think?  As soon as they were out of the oven, I treated myself to a glass of milk and  a few cookies.  I’m home alone this week, so I can indulge some favorite things.

biscoff toffee cookiesBy the way, if you don’t have a Silpat, get one.  They are wonderful for so many baked things, they clean up easy and can be used over and over again.

centerpieceWell, time in the kitchen took up most of the morning, so it’s time to sit by the fire and read.  On the way to the living room, however, the dining room table looked like it could use a little sprucing up.  Some pumpkins and gourds, a few fallen leaves from the porch and a new tablecloth took care of that in an instant.

Though I wouldn’t want too many days in a row like this one, every now and then it’s great to have a gown day.

i so appreciate your visit and the comments you leave behind

  3. Don’t you love those pajama days? I can taste those toffee cookies, Linda. Must get Leon a Silpat deal. He’d love it!

  4. The perfect way to spend an icky weather day! I will admit to this being more routine for me than I should publicly announce, but hey…I’m retired! I don’t think twice about it anymore! And I can only imagine how incredible your house smelled with the aroma of apples and toffee. Delicious! A glass of milk, a roaring fire, a good book, and unbeatable solitude. Love it!

  5. Gown days are the best! Your cake and cookies look divine! Hard to imagine sitting by the fire, it was 90 today in Orange Beach and we were swimming!

  6. What a peaceful photo of your Harbor and I love the gown or PJ day, we all need one of those from time to time. Your Cake looks amazing and would be a perfect indoor project that is so delicious. Thanks so much for sharing your awesome post with Full Plate Thursday and have a great weekend!
Hope to see you again real soon,

  7. A windy rainy day is perfect for hanging inside and baking. Despite being in your pjs your day sounds very productive and cozy by that fireplace. What a lucky friend – your cake looks absolutely delicious and thanks for the tip on the Silpat.. I dont know what it is, but I’ll check it out.

    1. Sadly, the cake is not gluten free, but that doesn’t keep gluten free members of my family from having a bit. Silpats are easy to find, and there are a baker’s friend.

  8. Love that term gown day Lulu! I’ve never heard that before. I will be using it from now on. lol! It’s been nice and warm here, but I too baked a batch of cookies yesterday. Your apple dapple cake sounds so delicious! Perfect for Fall. I bet your house smelled heavenly with it and the other yummies that you made.
    hugs,
    Jann

  10. Linda, that apple dapple cake looks delicious and a good way to use up apples.
Are you now living in Maine year ’round? I sure do miss New England…

Oh the Apple Dapple cake sounds wonderful…and it is so funny when I saw your title “Gown Day”…when I was working full time…we ladies from time to time would put in for a day off…we called it needing a “gown day”….to nest in the house and come back to work refreshed….hope you had a great “gown day”
