It Only Takes a Little

Most nights the hubby and I have dinner at home and generally sit at the bar.  No matter how simple the meal, it always seems better if it is presented attractively.  The required effort is minimal and is one way of nurturing creativity.

This night I used dishes that had belonged to my mother which made her seem closer.  She liked anything with roosters, and I can’t help but think of her every time I see anything with a rooster as part of the design.

With these plates, orange and green are a nice complement.By sheer luck, the flowers in small vases on the bar just happen to reflect the colors in the dishes so no extra steps had to be taken to pull everything together.

I generally use cloth napkins, and one of my favorite parts of table setting is finding ways to fold them.

Here I start with a square folded on the diagonal. Each layer is then folded back to create a saucy touch.Nothing could be much simpler.

So, there you have it, it only takes a little to make dinner at home special.

  1. Hi Linda~ I love your mother’s rooster plates! The pattern & their colors make them so versatile~ a little French Country or Cottage-y! We sit at our bars lots of nights too 🙂

  2. Hi Linda!

You are not going to believe this, but as I read this I remembered that my mom had a set of wooden cannisters with roosters on them! You created a very sweet table (bar) for two. I love that you mixed florals and plaids!

  3. And I think that your mom smiles every time that you pull out anything rooster. Your table a deux is charming. Thank you for inviting us for a peak. Cherry Kay

  4. Very warm and cozy setting. Love it.

  7. Love the rooster plates!

  8. There’s an Italian saying: One never grows old at the table — to linger as Shirley mentions is actually good for us and good for our digestion. I applaud your creativity. Dixie

I feel that if the table is nicely set with the unexpected for a typical weekday evening, you tend to sit longer at the table and “enjoy the company” …What a great way to enjoy your evening with loving memories of your mother…

  11. Uh oh…gettin’ really fancy with the layout! That last little collage is the bomb!!! I’m sitting here listening to Randy Travis’s “It’s Just A Matter of Time”, and it seemed to go with this setting somehow with your Mom’s plates and all. The words don’t match up, just the souldful sentiment and the melody. I love the way your beautiful alstoremeria ended up being the perfect complement to the dishes!!! LOVE it when things work out like that! Hope you’re having a great day! 🙂

  12. Always love your table settings Linda..so festive…and I have a soft spot for roosters too. My family always asks me to put out the tablecloth. There is just something about it that says home…I wash and iron with a smile.. 🙂
